Electrician Invoice FAQ
What should an electrician's invoice include?
An electrician's invoice should include your company name, license number, and contact info; the customer's name and job site address; a unique invoice number; the service date; itemized work (outlets, breakers, wiring, panels, fixtures) with quantities and prices; labor hours and rate; any permit fees; subtotal, tax, and total due; and your warranty and payment terms.
Should permit costs appear on an electrician's invoice?
Yes. If you pulled a permit, list it as a separate line item so the customer can see exactly what they paid. Document the permit number in your Terms section. This shows professionalism and protects both parties if there's ever an inspection or insurance claim.
How do I invoice for electrical labor and materials separately?
List each material (outlets, breakers, wire, conduit, fixtures) as its own line item with unit cost and quantity. Add a separate labor row with total hours worked and your hourly rate. This breakdown builds customer trust and makes insurance or warranty claims straightforward.
Do electricians charge sales tax on labor?
Most states tax electrical materials but not labor. Some states tax both. Use the Tax % field in the toolbar to apply your local rate to the appropriate items. Always consult your accountant for state-specific rules, as this varies significantly by jurisdiction.
What payment terms do electrical contractors typically use?
Net 15 or Net 30 is standard for electrical invoices. For large projects (panel upgrades, rewiring), a 25โ50% deposit before work starts is common, with the balance due upon completion. List accepted payment methods โ check, credit card, Zelle, or bank transfer โ clearly in the Payment Details section.
