Donation Receipt FAQ
What must a donation receipt include for IRS purposes?
For donations of $250 or more, the IRS requires: (1) the organization's name and EIN, (2) the date of the donation, (3) the donation amount or description of non-cash goods, and (4) a statement that "no goods or services were provided in exchange for the contribution" (or the value of any goods/services given). Donors need this receipt to claim a tax deduction.
Are nonprofits required to send donation receipts?
The IRS requires written acknowledgment for donations of $250 or more. For smaller donations, it's not legally required but is strongly recommended for donor relations and retention. Many 501(c)(3) organizations send receipts for all donations as standard practice.
How do I handle non-cash donations?
For non-cash donations (goods, items), describe the donated property in the receipt but do not assign a dollar value โ the donor is responsible for valuing the goods and reporting them. Note the condition of the items if relevant. For items valued over $5,000, a qualified appraisal is required.
Is this donation receipt template free?
Yes โ completely free, no account required, no watermark. Edit it for every donor and download as many times as needed.
