Freelance Contract FAQ
What should a freelance contract include?
A strong freelance contract should include: the project scope and specific deliverables, timeline with milestones, payment amount and schedule, number of revision rounds included, who owns the intellectual property (IP), a kill fee for cancellations, confidentiality terms, and the governing law.
What is a kill fee and why do I need one?
A kill fee is a cancellation penalty the client pays if they terminate the project after work has begun. It compensates you for time invested and opportunity costs. Without a kill fee clause, a client can cancel at any point and you may receive nothing for work already completed. A common kill fee is 25-50% of the remaining balance.
Is this freelance contract template free?
Yes, completely free — no account, no watermark, no time limit. Edit and download as many freelance contracts as you need for any discipline: design, development, writing, photography, video, and more.
Who owns the work I create as a freelancer?
By default in the US, the freelancer owns the copyright to their work. Rights transfer to the client only when explicitly stated in a written contract — typically "upon receipt of full payment." Always include a clear IP assignment clause and never transfer rights before final payment is received.
How many revision rounds should I offer?
Two to three revision rounds is standard for most freelance projects. Define a revision round as one consolidated list of changes submitted at one time. Bill additional revisions at your hourly rate. This prevents endless feedback loops and is a key protection to include in every freelance contract.
