Graphic Design Invoice FAQ
What should a graphic design invoice include?
A graphic design invoice should list each deliverable or project phase, the billing type (flat fee or hourly), revision rounds included, file formats delivered, licensing terms for the artwork, any deposit already paid, and the remaining balance with payment terms.
Should I charge flat rate or hourly for design work?
Flat-rate billing works best for well-defined projects (logo design, brochures) because clients know the total upfront. Hourly billing is better for open-ended work like ongoing brand support or complex projects where scope is uncertain. Many designers use flat fees for deliverables and hourly for revisions beyond the included rounds.
How do graphic designers handle revision billing?
Include 2โ3 rounds of revisions in your base fee and state this clearly in your proposal and invoice. Bill additional revisions at your hourly rate. Track revision hours and reference them on the invoice with a brief description so clients understand what they're paying for.
When does copyright transfer to the client?
By default, copyright remains with the designer. Transfer full IP rights to the client only upon receipt of final payment โ and state this explicitly on your invoice and contract. Until paid in full, the client has a limited license to use the work, not ownership.
